Summary
This module focuses on finalising your game and reflecting on your game development experience.
Before you start
This is the last step in your game development process. Before starting these activities, you need to have completed:
- Game development (Modules 4 to 7)
- Testing (Modules 8 and 9).
Tasks
Well done on getting this far with your game.
But, you’re not quite finished. You need to finalise your GDD and, through your mentor, submit your entry.
Finalising
Now is a good time to review your entire GDD. Check that you have completed all the sections.
- Are there any missing sections, or sections that you might be able to add a little more detail to?
You can also use the Scoring rubric to remind you about what is judged in the GDD. Go through each of the criteria and give yourself a rating using the 0 to 5 score on the rubric.
Be honest in your assessment of your work. For those criteria that you gave a lower score, refine and edit your GDD to try and improve.
Create a screen recording
Creating a short screen recording of your game to accompany your submission will help you check that your game is eligible for the challenge (as your game must be playable for 5 minutes). It will also assist judges in scoring more of your game, as sometimes they cannot get to your highest levels or might miss important features as they assess it. The screen recording is not intended to be a trailer. It does not require fancy headings or editing.
You can create a screen recording using software such as OBS Studio or Clipchamp. The screen recording should be 1 to 5 minutes long and include:
- the beginning of the game
- all key milestones, such as rewards, running out of time and defeat
- transitions into and completion of levels
- if your game includes background music and/or sound effects, the recording should contain audio from the game. This music and sound effects should be consistent with the visuals in the recording—i.e., they should be captured simultaneously while playing the game, not added as a background track. (The recording should contain no other audio tracks, i.e. non-game music or commentary.)
- the end of the game.
Once you have completed the screen recording, your mentor should upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and provide a private link to be included with your submission. There will be a space to add this link in the Game tab of the entry form.
Reflecting
Before you submit your game, now is a great time to reflect on the game development process and complete any outstanding sections of your GDD.
Check through the questions and suggestions in the Reflecting section of the GDD template and add your responses.
Submission
Finally, when you’re ready, organise to submit your game through your mentor. Each entry is submitted during the submission window through the mentor portal on the STEM VGC website.
